Topics, Entities and Readership Metrics in the News APIs

The News APIs provide topics and entities with scores for article relevance and estimates the unique potential readership for each article based on various factors.

TOPICS AND ENTITIES

For you to easily extract the most important information from each news article, we include topics and entities in our API output. You can also search for relevant topics and entities in our News Search API.

Showing enteties from twinglys News api
The topics are based on the IPTC Media Topics taxonomy. It is developed specifically for the categorization of media content and is constantly updated with new topics, on top of the 1,200 terms that are currently in use. With each topic follows a score that shows the overall confidence that the article is related to the topic.

The types of entities that we support are person, location and organization. With each entity, you also get the Wikidata ID, for you to get easy access to more information about the entity.

READERSHIP ON THE ARTICLE LEVEL

For each of the 3 million daily news articles in our News API, you will get metrics that estimate the unique potential readership. These metrics change over time, and you can get updated Readership metrics during the lifecycle of an article to see its attraction with readers.

This is a unique way to measure online article readership and has been the most sought-after feature in media monitoring for a long time.

The potential readership is a combination of the number of visitors to each news source and the lifetime of each article in the different sections at the source. We also consider the appeal of other articles from that news source, as well as the potential readership of articles at other sources.

This gives us the confidence to provide you with metrics for the potential readership for all online news articles in the world, available together with the full text of the articles in our News APIs.

Product FAQ

What is the scope of the News API's coverage?

We provide articles from over 170,000 active news sources worldwide. This includes most major news sources in practically all countries in the world. This gives you access to over 3 million news articles per day in our noise free News API.

How frequently is the API updated with new content?

We are adding new content every second, 24 hours a day. On average, there's only an 8-minute latency from when an article is published in any global news source to when it becomes available in our News APIs.

Is there support for multi-language content?

Yes, we support news articles in 76 languages.

Do the News APIs offer content filtering?

Yes, you can filter on keywords, language, country, news source, time period, author etc.

What kind of metadata does the API provide for each article?

Apart from the title and text of each article, we also provide timestamp, author, location, language, topics, entities, readership metrics etc.

Is it possible to add sources?

If you have noticed that we are not currently covering a particular news site, please let us know by filling out our Request Sources form. We will do our best to ensure that the site is indexed in the future. Note that adding new sources requires some manual work and comes with a small fee. For more information, please send an email to sales@twingly.com.

Is it possible to backfill old articles when a new site gets added?

No, unfortunately that is not possible. We only index new articles published after we have added the site.

Is it possible to re-index articles?

It is possible, though this isn't something that we normally do. We can reindex certain articles, or articles for a certain period back in time for a site, with some volume restrictions.

Do you update articles?

Not generally, but if the same article is found on another URL than originally, it may be updated.

Why isn't the full article available in some cases?

In some cases, if an article happens to be hidden behind a paywall, but there is some free news content available, the free (partial) content will be indexed.

How are country codes assigned to a site in the News API?

This is done manually when we add a new site. It is determined by the domain, whois information or any contact details found on the site itself.

Is it possible to access articles behind paywalls?

To access news articles behind paywalls, you need to supply Twingly with the following:

  • Credentials (e.g. username and password) for the newspaper site in question
  • Proof of approval from the newspaper to collect the articles behind the paywall

If you are interested in getting articles behind paywalls delivered, and can fulfill the above requirements, please contact us for more information.
